Says The Australian Institute Of Health And Welfare

“Back problems” describes a collection of conditions related to the bones, joints, soft tissue, muscles and nerves of the back. These conditions can affect the neck (cervical spine), upper back (thoracic spine) and lower back (lumbar spine) as well as the sacrum and tailbone (coccyx).

Back problems include:

  • pain and stiffness in the lower, middle and upper back caused by a range of injuries, repetitive-monotonous movements and postural problems
  • pain including tingling, numbness and weakness in the legs that starts from the lower back
  • degeneration of the spine caused by unbalanced wear and tear on the spinal discs and joints
  • pressure on a spinal nerve as it exits between two vertebrae

  1. Medications: Pain-killers and Anti-inflammatories.
  2. Soft Tissue Therapy such as Massage or Physiotherapy
  3. Chiropractic Adjustments or Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)

While I do see the convenience of using medications for symptom management there are the potential risks of side effects with long term-use. Medications such as pain-killers also aim to address the symptoms associated with the problem rather than the underlying problem itself… not a great long term solution.

Structural shifts to the spine can cause a range of secondary symptoms including;

  • Asymmetry
  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches + Migraines
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Stiffness and Arthritis
  • Disc Bulges
  • Dizziness + Vertigo
  • Low Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Muscle Tension
  • Muscle Imbalance
  • Numbness / Tingling
  • Pinched Nerves
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Strength Issues
  • Upper Back Pain
  • Rotator Cuff Issues
